Effect of Induced Hypercalcemia on Gastric Secretion in the Dog

Abstract
It has been reported that intravenous infusion of calcium stimulates gastric acid secretion in man. However, this stimulatory response has not been observed in experimental dog.
To study the effect of induced hypercalcemia on gastric secretion, the volume and acidity were measured every one hour during calcium chloride infusion (15 mg/kgJB.W.) for 4 hours in 5 Heidenhain pouch dogs and 5 Pavlov pouch dogs. The results obtained were as follows;
1. A significant increment of serum calcium level was observed. from one and a half hours after the infusion of calcium chloride.
2. The volume and total acid of gastric secretion were not significantly increased after the infusion of calcium.
3. No noticeable difference between Heidenhain and Pavlov pouch dogs was in response of gastric secretion to calcium infusion.
